The Bright Star Catalogue (BSC) is widely used as a source of basic astronomical and astrophysical data for stars brighter than magnitude 6.5. 9096 of the catalogued 9110 objects are stars, while 14 were subsequently found to be either novae or extragalactic objects. These 14 have been retained to preserve the numbering. For the 9096 stars, the BSC provides identifications in several other widely-used catalogs (including double- and multiple-star identifications), equatorial (B1900.0 and J2000.0) and galactic coordinates, proper motions (J2000.0), UBVRI photoelectric photometric data (when they exist), Morgan-Keenan (MK) spectral types, and a wide range of other useful information. In addition to the data file, there is an extensive remarks file that gives more detailed information on individual entries. The existence of remarks is flagged in the main data file.

The Tycho-2 Catalogue is an astrometric reference catalogue containing positions and proper motions as well as two-colour photometric data for the 2.5 million brightest stars in the sky. The Tycho-2 positions and magnitudes are based on precisely the same observations as the original Tycho Catalogue (hereafter Tycho-1; see Cat. I/239)) collected by the star mapper of the ESA Hipparcos satellite, but Tycho-2 is much bigger and slightly more precise, owing to a more advanced reduction technique. Components of double stars with separations down to 0.8 arcsec are included. Proper motions precise to about 2.5 mas/yr are given as derived from a comparison with the Astrographic Catalogue and 143 other ground-based astrometric catalogues, all reduced to the Hipparcos celestial coordinate system. Tycho-2 supersedes in most applications Tycho-1, as well as the ACT (Cat. I/246) and TRC (Cat. I/250) catalogues based on Tycho-1. Supplement-1 lists stars from the Hipparcos and Tycho-1 C

The AC 2000.2 is a revised version of the 1997 release of the AC 2000 (Urban et al. 1998). It was decided that the availability of an improved reference catalogue and the inclusion of the Tycho-2 photometry would be sufficient to warrant a complete re-reduction of the data and a new distribution of the catalogue. The AC 2000.2 is a catalogue of positions and magnitudes of 4,621,751 stars covering the entire sky around the epoch of 1900. The data are derived from the images measured and published as part of the Astrographic Catalogue (AC). The positions are on the Hipparcos reference frame (ESA 1997), having originally been reduced plate-by-plate using an updated version of the Astrographic Catalog Reference Stars. Each of the 22 zones of the AC has been reduced independently, since telescopes, observing techniques and measurement methods varied. This document describes the history behind the Astrographic Catalogue, the reference catalogue used to transform the measurements to equatoria

Cataclysmic Variable Stars
The Catalog and Atlas of Cataclysmic Variables (Edition 1: Downes & Shara; Edition 2: Downes, Webbink, & Shara) has been a valuable source of information for the cataclysmic variable community. However, the goal of having a central location for all objects is slowly being lost as each new edition is generated. There can also be a long time delay between new information becoming available on an object and its publication in the catalog. To eliminate these concerns, as well as to make the catalog more accessible, we have created a Web site which will contain a "living" edition of the catalog. We have also added orbital period information, as well as finding charts for novae, to the catalog.

The PSCz survey consists of redshifts, infra-red and optical photometry, and assorted other information for 18351 IRAS sources, mostly selected from the Point Source Catalog. The survey was designed to select almost all galaxies with flux brighter than 0.595Jy at 60 microns, over the 84% of the sky with extinction small enough that reliable and complete optical identification and spectroscopy was possible. Some of the sources are not galaxies and some are multiple entries for the same galaxy as described below. There are in total 15411 galaxies or possible galaxies, for which redshifts are available for 14677. The galaxies without redshift are mostly distant or at low latitude, as described below. Many of these galaxies have now been observed as part of the BTP project (Saunders et al 1999, astro-ph/9909174 "The Behind the Plane Survey"), and their redshifts will be included in future revisions of the catalogue.

VII/223) containing nearly 10,000 new QSOs, almost doubled the number of known such objects: there are now 23760 (+10546) quasars (defined as brighter than absolute B magnitude -23), 5751 (+1323) AGNs (defined as fainter than absolute B magnitude -23) of which 2765 are Seyfert 1, and 608 (+146) BL Lac objects from 2173 (+119) references. Like the ninth edition, it includes position and redshift as well as photometry (U, B, V) and 6 and 11 cm flux densities when available. The present edition this catalogue contains the quasars with measured redshift known prior to May 1st, 2001.

The catalog is a compilation of information for approximately 34000 galaxies found and examined on the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS). Individual identifiers are assigned for about 29000 galaxies and information on the remaining 5000 is present in the extensive notes of the published catalogs (Vorontsov-Velyaminov et al. 1962-1968). The catalog is structured according to the POSS zones, counting from the equator, and is numbered from +15 (corresponding to +90 deg) to +01 (+06 zone) and +00 (equatorial zone) to -05 (-30 zone); the fields are numbered with increasing right ascension. The catalog includes cross-identifications to the NGC (Dreyer 1888) and IC (Dreyer 1895, 1908) catalogs, equatorial coordinates for B1950.0, magnitudes, estimated sizes and intensities of the brighter inner region and the entire object, and estimated inclinations.

UBVRI photoelectric observations have been made on the Johnson-Kron-Cousins photometric system of 526 stars centered on the celestial equator. The program stars within a 298 number subset have sufficient measures so that they are capable of providing, for telescopes of intermediate and large size in both hemispheres, an internally consistent homogeneous broadband standard photometric system around the sky. The stars average 29 measures each on 19 nights. The majority of the stars in this paper fall in the magnitude range 11.5-16.0, and in the color range -0.3 to +2.3.

For the 14 hours of peak Leonid meteoroid flux in November 2002, the Hubble Space Telescope was pointed away from the radiant, and the solar arrays were oriented to minimize their cross-section. By coincidence, one of the nearest and largest planetary nebulae, the Helix Nebula (NGC 7293), was nearly opposite the incoming Leonids and could be observed. A "Hubble Helix Team" (below) of volunteers led by Margaret Meixner (STScI) organized a nine-orbit campaign to observe the Helix with the ACS, WFPC2, NICMOS, and STIS.

A second Hubble Deep Field campaign was carried out between late September and October of 1998. The raw, pipeline calibrated and reprocessed data were released to the community on November 23, 1998. The rationale for undertaking a second deep field campaign followed from the wealth of information that has come out of HDF-N, and from the desire to provide a point of focus for similar studies of the distant universe from southern-hemisphere facilities. The wide public access to the HDF-N data stimulated extensive followup observations across the electromagnetic spectrum, both from major ground-based observatories and from other satellites.

The Team Keck Treasury Redshift Survey (TKRS) is a project of W.M. Keck Observatory to carry out a deep spectroscopic survey of galaxies within the boundaries of the GOODS-North field. The TKRS will enhance the impact of the data acquired by the GOODS collaboration, (which uses NASA's space-based Great Observatories - Hubble Space Telescope, Spitzer Space Telescope, XMM-Newton and Chandra) by providing researchers with the ability to study large-scale structure, galaxy dynamics, and abundances for this exquisite sample of intermediate- and high-redshift targets. Our survey follows the footsteps of Judy Cohen’s HDF Redshift Survey with LRIS ( 1996, 2000) and is complemented by two similar projects: Len Cowie’s DEIMOS survey of an additional 600 objects in the GOODS-North region and a sample of fainter targets observed by the Gemini North + GMOS group. In the spirit of a “Treasury” survey, TKRS aims at providing the astronomical community with a set of data free of proprietary period and

Simply put, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey is the most ambitious astronomical survey ever undertaken. The survey will map one-quarter of the entire sky in detail, determining the positions and absolute brightnesses of hundreds of millions of celestial objects. It will also measure the distances to more than a million galaxies and quasars.
The SDSS addresses fascinating, fundamental questions about the universe. With the survey, astronomers will be able to see the large-scale patterns of galaxies: sheets and voids through the whole universe. Scientists have many ideas about how the universe evolved, and different patterns of large-scale structure point to different theories. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey will tell us which theories are right - or whether we will have to come up with entirely new ideas.

The Two Degree Field system (`2dF') is the AAT's (and arguably the world's) most complex astronomical instrument. It is designed to allow the acquisition of up to 400 simultaneous spectra of objects anywhere within a two degree field on the sky. It consists of a wide field corrector, an atmospheric dispersion compensator, a robot gantry which positions optical fibres to 0.3'' and two spectrographs each of which accepts 200 of the fibres to produce low to medium resolution spectra. A tumbling mechanism with two field plates allows the next field to be configured while the current field is being observed

The NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) is a 1.4 GHz continuum survey covering the entire sky north of -40 deg declination. A detailed description appears in the 1998 May issue of The Astronomical Journal (Condon, J. J., Cotton, W. D., Greisen, E. W., Yin, Q. F., Perley, R. A., Taylor, G. B., & Broderick, J. J. 1998, AJ, 115, 1693). The principal NVSS data products are:
A set of 2326 continuum image ``cubes,'' each covering 4 deg X 4 deg with three planes containing the Stokes I, Q, and U images. These images were made with a relatively large restoring beam (45 arcsec FWHM) to yield the high surface-brightness sensitivity needed for completeness and photometric accuracy. Their rms brightness fluctuations are about 0.45 mJy/beam = 0.14 K (Stokes I) and 0.29 mJy/beam = 0.09 K (Stokes Q and U). The rms uncertainties in right ascension and declination vary from < 1 arcsec for relatively strong (S > 15 mJy) point sources to 7 arcsec for the faintest (S = 2.3 mJy) detectable sources. X-ray astronomy
The Chandra X-ray Observatory is the U.S. follow-on to the Einstein Observatory. Chandra was formerly known as AXAF, the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility, but renamed by NASA in December, 1998. Originally three instruments and a high-resolution mirror carried in one spacecraft, the project was reworked in 1992 and 1993. The Chandra spacecraft carries a high resolution mirror, two imaging detectors, and two sets of transmission gratings. Important Chandra features are: an order of magnitude improvement in spatial resolution, good sensitivity from 0.1 to 10 keV, and the capability for high spectral resolution observations over most of this range.

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey is a project to survey a 10000 square degree area on the Northern sky over a 5 year period. A dedicated 2.5m telescope is specially designed to take wide field (3 degrees in diameter) images using a 5x6 mosaic of 2048x2048 CCD`s, in five wavelength bands, operating in drift scan mode. The total raw data will exceed 40 TB. A processed subset, of about 1 TB in size, will consist of 1 million spectra, positions and image parameters for over 100 million objects, plus a mini-image centered on each object in every color. The data will be made available to the public after the completion of the survey

spectrophotometry
IUE (International Ultraviolet Explorer) performed UV spectrophotometry at resolutions of 0.2 and 6 Angstroms from 1150 to 3350 Angstroms, acquiring more than 104000 spectra of some 9600 objects.
INES (IUE Newly Extracted Spectra) was defined as a final step in the archive and distribution phase of IUE data. The purpose of the INES system is to reach the maximum number of scientists, with a simple distribution scheme, and to provide high-quality data in a form that does not require a detailed knowledge of the instrumental characteristics. Problems identified during the scientific verification of the IUE Final Archive (IUEFA) output products were fixed for the INES distribution.
The INES distribution system is structured in two levels: A Principal Centre hosted at LAEFF and mirrored at Canada (CADC) and Japan (NAOJ) with the complete database and archive server and a number of National Hosts distributed worldwide.
